Review and Comparison: Building Chicken Coops

Short-Cut Your Research Time and Discover Below Which Building Chicken Coops Plan Answers Your Needs Best

Hi Friends … welcome to “eBuilding-Chicken-Coops” !

We aim to be the best “research, report, and review” consumer site for building chicken coops.

We’re health buffs. We love everything organic. We even try to eat “raw” as far as our palate and gut could take it. We were getting concerned about the quality of the chicken meat we’re getting from the stores, and the high cost of organic eggs that is getting popular.

When we searched the Internet about raising backyard chickens, we were astounded by the high cost of ready-made chicken coops for sale (some of which you will still assemble anyway).

So, we switched the search to the “free” ones. Immediately, we were appalled by the lack of details and the lack of organization in the free chicken coop plans…. We had the option to gather the information that we needed for free in the Internet … . but decided against the idea because it will take us a long time to do it.

Show Your Smarts, Save Time And Keep Your Research Money In Your Pocket …. The Research For Chicken Coops Has Already Been Done For You … (But If You Insist, Go Ahead And Do Your Own Due Diligence.)

Since you know, and we know, that time is money – we researched further into the chicken coop designs that are sold in the Internet.

We found 5 easy chicken coop plans. We narrowed them down to 3 that give the most “bang-for-your-buck”. (All 3 actually tied for this factor.)

Manny, the Editor, used his corporate background as a planning and systems analyst to help us make an “informed decision”. He did away with the “weights” and other complex business jargon and made things very simple that we, the average homeowner can appreciate.

So, here is the summary of your comprehensive guide to building chicken coops. The recommendations suggested are based on the goals, needs, or requirements of the Buyer or Researcher.

Building Chicken Coop — Carpenters Not Needed

The following is a guest article from Dan Kennedy. He is the author of the “only video guide in building chicken coops“, today (as of this writing).

If you try and find some information on how you can build a backyard chicken coop then it can be quite difficult to find some step-by-step plans.
What normally happens is you search for some information and can find snippets of information here and there but nothing really that will help you do this in the long run.
The dangers of starting to build a backyard chicken coop with the little bits of information that you find is that you will normally run into problems with incomplete instructions!
Then of course you are left there with a half built chicken coop and some leftover equipment!
This is normally where most people give up and go out and pay the extortionate prices for a ready made coop!
Well the good news is this article will tell you how to make sure that you get some good chicken coop plans.
All you need to do is make sure that you get a reputable guide that will show you how to do this. It is worth spending a little bit of money to make sure that you get full instructions, and also if the guide has videos that guide you through the process this is even better.
If you’re worried about spending money on some coop plans make sure that it comes with a full guarantee and you should be fine.
Lastly make sure that you know what size of backyard coop you want and how many chickens you want to keep beforehand.
I would recommend if you are just starting out to maybe start with two or three chickens and then of course you can upgrade from there.
Keeping chickens can be very rewarding, they will produce organic eggs or not to mention they make excellent soil fertilisers!
Before I leave you to it another thing that I should mention is to make sure that you are able to build a backyard chicken coop that is free from predators or at least one that keeps you chickens safe!
I hope this article has taken some of the guesswork out of picking some good backyard chicken coop plans and if you follow the tips above you should have no problems getting started at the fraction of the cost compared to a pre-built coop!
Of course the option is always there to pay a bit more money and get a pre-built coop if all else fails!
Good luck and remember to have fun!

Backyard Chickens’ Legalities

Learn Backyard Chickens Legalities And Keep City Inspectors Away

Jason Perry, A fellow chicken lover wrote a very good article touching on the legal issues that may arise when you build your chicken coop.  I touched lightly  on backyard chicken legalities when I wrote the introduction in our review of the Chicken-DIY-Guides.

Jason’s article below elaborates more.

Raising Backyard Chickens – Know Your Legal Aspects Before Starting

We are often confused whether chickens are pets or simply kept for productive aspects. One logical reasoning can be that if more chickens are raised and their eggs are consumed, then they are for productive and profitable reasons. And if a person keeps a chicken-that is because they want to keep the chickens as a pet. This is where the problem and the confusion with legal aspects come into play. This is to give you a thorough insight into the legal corners that you might have to face.

Necessary Permission:

It is especially important in some countries that you need to take a NOC from your local councilor among other things. Also, you have to need to know whether you area and space and house permits for breeding chickens. If you did not know, then there could be complications and your little ones could be outlawed by the rules in your area or otherwise.

Health Department:

The government does not want a re-run of what affected masses worldwide-Bird Flu and hence the mentioned checks. Whatever be the weird reason and explanation, the chickens must pass the Environmental Health Department’s checks before passing a ‘clean’ order. These are some formalities that have to be complied with in order to keep and breed chickens in your backyard.

Neighbours:

Your neighbours may object to you raising chickens in your backyard. This is mainly because the chicken (cockerel) is considered to be a very noise and dirty animal and is associated with foul odors amongst others. Therefore if the local area council does not approve of your hobby or business interest due to complaints from neighbours, you can really do nothing about that. This problem is subjective and if you’re interested in breeding chickens, you better convince your neighbours first!

House Deed:

Before even starting to think about raising chickens in your house, you have to ensure that your house deed is in order and is out of any legal complications. Unexpected hurdles may arise with house deeds and raising chickens! No wonder, they are a deadly combination – literally!

Zone Laws and Land Usage:

Did you know that there are laws which govern a zone? The entire city or town has been divided into many zones – this is to check land usage patterns. This is part of the larger plan and law which governs us. The zone laws have been drafted particularly to check the growth and multiplication of a particular community. There would be problems if chickens were allowed a free run there!

Before thinking about starting any venture, you must take care and consider the legal complications; you wouldn’t want to be in a mess! It is for you and you chickens’ welfare!

BTW, Jason also wrote a very good ebook  on how to raise perfect chickens that will keep giving you perfect eggs and tender, tasty white meat all year-round.

Three sets of secret that I discovered (among so many) were:

How to choose the perfect chicken breed with these 3 simple techniques…

3 little known, yet simple ways to clean and maintain your chickens housing…

3 things you should never do when it comes to raising chickens

This One-Stop Chicken Raising Resource is a perfect companion to chicken coop plans. I strongly advise to get it while the cost is still ridiculously cheap (too low to mention)  compared to the information he is giving. #

Choosing Your Best Chicken Coop Plan, 8 Steps

,

How To Choose The Best Building Chicken Coops Plan That Will Save You Time, Money, and Energy — In 8 Simple Steps

.

With the increasing popularity of “green” and “organic”, and “frugality” because of recession, many homeowners are looking for chicken coops plans to build in their own backyards.

If you’re one of them (I am), then I’m offering you the step-by-step outline which I used in giving me the best chicken coop plan that made me happy and fulfilled.

Step 1: Determine Your End In Mind

What do you want to really have? Do you want fresh organic white chicken meat? Do you want fresh organic eggs? Do you want chickens as pets? Do you want to scale up and do a small poultry business?

What is it really that you want? Making this clear in your mind simplifies everything from now on.

Step 2: Where Do You Live?

Your location is a vital factor on your choice of a chicken pen. If you live in a city where houses are close to each other, you have to check with city’s zoning laws governing backyard chickens … . You don’t want the City Sanitation Inspector knocking at your door after you have already spent considerable investments. He may want some costly modifications, or worse, he might say that it is now allowed (yuks!).

Also, the climate in your area decides what kind of insulation or cooling system might be needed. If it snows in your area, then you have to factor in “heaters”. And heaters add up to your costs, which drive up the cost of your organic eggs that maybe – it’s more reasonable to just buy those over-priced organic eggs at the nearby grocery store.

Step 3: How Many Chickens Do You Intend To Keep? Which Chicken Coop Size Is Appropriate?

The best behaved chicken is a chicken who feels free. That means, she feels she can roam and peck around and feel not overcrowded. If your chicken is “free-range”, then you don’t have this kind problem (but watch out for predators!).

A hen that feels comfortable lays eggs after eggs. Therefore, it is a must that your chickens feel happy and comfortable.

The size of the chook house depends on the population of the chicken you intend to keep. There are building chicken coops guide that have plans from portable, small to large, to very large.

Some designs have chicken fences that protect them from getting too far, and risk getting eaten by their natural predators like raccoons and foxes.

Step 4: Do You Want Your Chickens Kept As`Pets?

If your to this question is Yes, then the most logical type of chicken house is the “transportable” or mobile type. And because you want to keep them as pets, their house must look good, and smell, nice and clean.

Step 5: What Is Your Budget?

Obviously, this is a limiting factor. This step brings us back to our senses. How much can I really afford? Fortunately, for the budget-conscious, there are building chicken coop plans that point out where to source cheap but durable materials.

But if money were no object, you can always buy a ready-built one. One obvious advantage is you see what you are buying and therefore can choose which one appeals to you best. A disadvantage though is that you cannot customize it without spending more, and that the shipping cost may very significant.

Step 6: What kind of Ground Do You Have?

Is the ground firm? If not, you need to prepare the ground with a solid foundation. You may consider putting up a concrete base with your foundational posts on concrete footing connected to each other so that the structure will not shift over time.

Is the land on a level ground? If it is, then consider the drainage or the runoff when it rains. You don’t want the ground your #chicken house# to get soggy when it rains.

Step 7: If You Choose To Do-It-Yourself, How Do You Learn Best?

If you choose to build your own coop, then there are cheap building chicken coops plans available in the Internet. Question: How do you learn best? If you think you learn best by video, then consider a make your chicken coop video guide. If you learn best by combination of visual, audio, and action, then consider the guides that offer just that. Fortunately, most plans for chicken coop cater to individuals who learn “combinationally” because they comprise almost 90% of all learning types.

Step 8: Am I Ready To Clean My Chicken House? What Do I Intend To Do With The Poultry Manure?

Let’s face it. Raising any live being produces wastes. Wastes smell. Are you ready for the nitty-gritty of cleaning after your chickens … and, on a regular basis?

If no … if you’re just after the eggs and the white meat …. then just buy from Walmart, or the nearest grocery store.

But if you do, if you don’t mind getting down and dirty in return for organic, farm-fresh eggs, and better-tasting, “native” chicken meat -– then welcome to the wonderful world of raising backyard chickens! #

Positives:

  1. The Plans are detailed and well-laid out. Set of designs nearly cover all possibilities for the backyard poultry.
  2. Video library that is very informative and helpful in raising chickens
  3. Has a guide on City Ordinances (you don’t want the City Inspector visiting you when you already have your poultry up, do you?)
  4. The bonuses are an excellent complement to the main ebook.
  5. Very good product support

Areas for Improvement:

  1. For those with no engineering or carpentry background, a set of videos on laying out the ground and the foundation might be helpful. (But the Authors may have seen that the instructions are simple, and easy enough to follow that they see no need for it. — Editor)

  2. At a price point of $39, relative to the other products reported here, it is at the “high end” … but even at that cost, the value of the information given in the product is at least a $100. So, you, still save a lot of money.

“…My wife told me just buy a coop out right.I am so glad I bit the bullet and tried the guide! Took me about 3 and a half days to build the coop (that is outstanding for me!) … Awesome videos and I love my coop! Thanks so much! — Portion of Comment by William D. of US

Positives:

  1. A video guide that shows how to build your chicken coup from start to finish. For the visual learners, this is a blessing.
  2. The Plans are detailed and well-laid out
  3. Offer of one-on-one technical support by email … a token offer that most likely will not be needed … because … come on — will you write just to ask something that’s already in the “books”?

Areas for Improvement:

  1. The design covers two plans — a “small” coup good for 4 chickens, and a “large” coop good for 8 chickens. A 3rd design for a “larger” chicken coop would be more desirable.
  2. There appears to be no information on zoning regulations (city rules governing raising of backyard chickens) … But this is easily-remedied using the Internet or inquiries with the local city authorities since the information may vary from city to city.
